Get your tiling licence.

You’ve tiled bathrooms, kitchens and floors for someone else. In NSW, a wall and floor tiling licence lets you take those jobs in your own name. We help with the Certificate III and the application.

What NSW asks for
A Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling (CPC31320), or an earlier version on Building Commission NSW’s list, such as CPC31311

What the licence lets you do.

A bathroom is days of skilled work. On someone else’s licence you’re paid a rate for it. On your own, you quote the whole room, waterproofing included, and keep the difference.

  • Take on residential tiling over $5,000 in labour and materials, with your name on the contract.
  • Waterproof wet areas to get them ready for your tiles, as part of the same job.
  • Lay floors, walls, splashbacks and mosaics, inside and out.
  • Prepare the surface, make minor repairs and set expansion joints before you tile.

Who qualifies.

Wall and floor tiling licences in NSW come from Building Commission NSW. It asks for the right Certificate III and a police check. There’s no set number of years.

  • A Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling (CPC31320). Older versions on the list, like CPC31311, are accepted too.

  • Tiling work you can show an RTO: photos, references and pay records that prove you work to standard.

  • A National Police Check, dated within four months of your application.

  • No apprenticeship still running. NSW issues the licence once your apprenticeship or traineeship is complete.

Worth knowing: Your licence covers waterproofing wet areas before you tile them.

Other states and territories set their own rules. Tell us where you work, and we’ll check them for you.

What you already hold

From your first call to your licence.

How it usually goes. Your case may skip a step, or need one we’ll explain at the start.

  1. Free eligibility check

Tell us which jobs you’ve tiled and for how long. We’ll say whether the licence is realistic now, what’s missing and what it costs.

  2. Your evidence pack

We help you turn job photos, references and pay records into evidence an RTO can assess, and point out gaps early.

  3. Assessment by an RTO

A registered training organisation assesses you for the Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling. Some units may need a practical demonstration or a short interview.

  4. Your licence application

We prepare your application to Building Commission NSW, with the certificate, police check and forms ready for you to lodge in person.

  5. Licensed

Once it’s approved, you can contract tiling work in your own name. The licence runs for one, three or five years before you renew.

Questions people ask us.

Something else on your mind?

Ask us on WhatsApp
Do I need a licence for a small bathroom?

You need one for residential tiling worth more than $5,000 in labour and materials, including GST. Count the tiles, adhesive and waterproofing in that total, not only your labour.

Does a tiling licence cover waterproofing?

Partly. It covers waterproofing wet areas to get them ready for tiling. A waterproofing licence is a separate class, and it doesn’t cover laying tiles. If you do both kinds of job, ask us about holding both.

Can I take on a whole bathroom renovation?

That’s a different licence class in NSW: kitchen, bathroom and laundry renovation. A tiling licence is one of the ways in, with a set of extra building units on top. Ask us what you’d need.

I tiled overseas for years. Does that count?

Your overseas tiling can count as evidence when an RTO assesses you for the Certificate III. The licence needs the Australian qualification, because NSW doesn’t recognise overseas ones. We’ll help you turn those jobs into evidence.

What will it cost, and how long will it take?

That depends on what you already hold and how much tiling you can show. The free check gives you the full cost and a fair timeframe before you sign up for anything.

I tile in another state. Can you help?

Yes. Every state handles tiling licences its own way. Tell us where you work and we’ll check what that state asks for.
