Get your bricklaying licence.

You’ve laid courses for houses, fences and feature walls. In NSW, a bricklaying licence lets you put your own name on those contracts. We help you through the qualification and the application.

What NSW asks for
A Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying (CPC33020), or an earlier version on Building Commission NSW’s list, such as CPC30111

What the licence lets you do.

On a subcontract, you’re paid per brick and the builder keeps the rest. With your own licence, you can quote fences and walls straight to the owner, and price them yourself.

  • Contract residential brick and block work over $5,000 in labour and materials.
  • Build brick fences and freestanding walls, with the small footings under them.
  • Lay brick retaining walls that don’t need council approval, and fit the flashing.
  • Put it toward a builder licence later, in place of the Diploma.

Your name on the sign.

It stays on your screen. Nothing is sent or saved.

Who qualifies.

Building Commission NSW issues bricklaying licences. It asks for a Certificate III from its list and a police check, with no set number of years.

  • A Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying (CPC33020), or an older one on the list, such as CPC30111.

  • Brick or block work an RTO can assess: photos, references and pay records from real jobs.

  • A National Police Check that’s no more than four months old.

  • A completed apprenticeship, if you started one. Current apprentices can’t be issued a licence.

Worth knowing: Footings for house walls, and structural concrete, need a different licence.

What you already hold

From your first call to your licence.

How it usually goes. Your case may skip a step, or need one we’ll explain at the start.

  1. Free eligibility check

Tell us what you’ve laid and for how long. We’ll tell you whether the licence is realistic now, what’s missing and what it costs.

  2. Your evidence pack

We help you collect photos, references and pay records, and spot any gaps before the RTO sees them.

  3. Assessment by an RTO

A registered training organisation assesses you for the Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying. Some units may need a practical task or a short interview.

  4. Your licence application

We prepare your application to Building Commission NSW and check every form and attachment before you lodge it in person.

  5. Licensed

Once it’s approved, you can contract brick and block work in your own name. The licence runs one, three or five years, as you choose.

Ask us on WhatsApp
When do I need a licence?

For residential bricklaying worth more than $5,000 in labour and materials, including GST. Bricks, blocks and mortar count toward that figure as well as your labour.

Can it lead to a builder licence?

Yes, it’s one route. Building Commission NSW accepts a Certificate IV in Building and Construction with a bricklaying licence instead of the Diploma. You also need two years’ wide building experience under a licensed builder.

Does it cover concrete?

Only minor concreting that supports your brickwork, like small footings for a freestanding fence or wall. Slabs and the footings under house walls need another licence.

I laid bricks overseas. Does it count?

It can help as evidence when an RTO assesses you for the Certificate III here. The licence itself needs that Australian qualification. We’ll help you put your overseas jobs on paper.

How much is it, and how long does it take?

We’ll know once we see your evidence and what you already hold. The free check tells you the full cost and a realistic timeframe.

Can you help in other states?

Yes. Bricklaying rules aren’t the same in every state. Tell us where you work, and we’ll check before you spend anything.
